3 years is not 3 days

On the 20th of May, we celebrate our third anniversary! It has been a fantastic journey, and we wouldn’t be here without you!

Portuguese for gringos is a project that was born during the pandemic and had different formats. Our mission is to spread Brazilian culture worldwide and help non-Portuguese speakers communicate in Portuguese with their loved ones. We are constantly trying to adapt to support and empower those on the Portuguese learning journey. We had a physical space before, but since the lockdown, we needed to migrate to the online platform, which allowed us to reach every state of Australia.

During the last three years, we could participate in a few events, such as the first and second Portuguese as Foreign Language Online Congress, in which we could collaborate with the presentation of the theme “Teaching Portuguese as a Foreign Language and Popular Brazilian Festivities”. In addition, we were also part of an exhibition at the Museum of Portuguese Language in São Paulo.

We also offered some “special experiences in Portuguese” by attending percussion class or celebrating Brazilian festivities such as “carnaval” and “festa junina” and even celebrating some group’s graduation at the Sydney Film Festival. The latest event was held by the Consulate of Brazil in Sydney in which different schools were participating, and we could contribute to the growth not only of the Brazilian community but also the group of people who are Brazilian by heart (our beloved gringos/as).

What started with one teacher and one student became a team of five teachers and over 150 students in every Australian state. So today is a day to celebrate this journey and to thank everyone who has been supporting us and trusting our work. Muito obrigada!
